[edited to include updated information, March 2, 2009]
During our vacation in central Florida I spotted this beautiful shrub. Unfortunately there was no one out and about when I took the picture so I could not ask what it was.
Thanks to the help of Sinclair this shrub has been identified. He sent me this link to help me in the identification. Wind also commented that it might be bottlebrush but a search found that bottlebrush Callistemon grows mainly in east and southeast Australia (ref. here). Bottlebrush has a much elongated but similar bloom to the powderpuff shrub. Thank-you both so much for your help! I really appreciate it.
Unfortunately for me this shrub grows best in tropical and subtropical climates so the cooler temperatures of Ontario, Canada especially in the winter months would likely mean the shrub would not survive. For those interested in this pretty shrub, check out the link from Sinclair. It is quite informative. I'm sure this shrub would look wonderful in your garden!
One of the downsides to vacationing is seeing all this beautiful vegetation that I would love to be able to grow. I am going to have to enjoy them while on vacation but the possibility of growing indoors is always a possibility as soon as I can talk my husband into a nice conservatory.
Happy Gardening!

Wasn't sure if I already pressed send on my comment or not...hehehe.
Thanks so much! It certainly looks likes the picture in the link you posted. I will update the entry.
ReplyDeleteI think that it is called a bottlebrush! I'm not certain though...~Wind
ReplyDeleteFYI-I'm trying to drop cards and I've refreshed 3 times and your Entrecard drop area is not loading.
ReplyDeleteHi Wind, I wonder if that might be a common name for this shrub?
ReplyDeleteHi Lola, I noticed problems with EC for about a half hour then it seemed to be ok. During that time the widgets weren't loading. I only had a couple left to do so wasn't worried about it. Hopefully things are up and running better shortly. Thanks for the drop :)
ReplyDeleteThat plant blooms well in tropical asian country too.
ReplyDeleteI will show you the photo once I've taken :)
Dear Garden Gnome,
ReplyDeleteWhat happened to our very exclusive Yahoo Canning and Food Preservation Group? It has disappeared from my menu of Yahoo Groups. Sorry to ask on this thread but don't know how else to reach you. In the event you were not the moderator of this group, please let me know if you knew the lady who moderated this group. Thanks. Jim in So. California
Interesting looking plant, no clue what it's called though.
ReplyDeleteSorry you didn't approve my EC widget, so thought I'd ask why; as a reason is suppose to accompany the denial.
Sandh
Jim, effective February 25, 2009 I set my cooking and preserving group to private for family and family friends only for personal reasons. At some point I may re-open it to the public so please check from time to time.
ReplyDeleteHi Sandy, I am so sorry about not approving your ad. By now you likely have received an email from Entrecard outlining their new policy. They are now dictating where the widget can appear as well as starting 3rd party ads of which you either have to run or pay to not run. Neither of these changes sit well with my philosophy as a blogger. I certainly do not want to be dictated to as to how to design my blog or have no control over what ads will be shown. The changes are coming into effect within the next week. As a result all scheduled ads on all 5 of my blogs were cancelled because it would not be fair to them if EC decides to cancel my account because on non-compliance to the new rules. The reason given which is valid is "not accepting ads at this time". I am currently in the process of using up my credits then will be leaving Entrecard when the new policies come into effect.
