Neighbours talking over the garden gate has long been a tradition. They share gardening tips, complain about the weather and pests yet are ever eager to discuss their gardens. That is what I had in mind when creating this blog. So stop by my garden gate to find out the latest happenings in my garden.

Pickling Cucumber Update

I planted 4 planters with pickling cucumbers.  To date I have managed to get 2 pickle sized cucumbers off the vines.  I'm not impressed!  Tomorrow I will be replacing these vines with likely geraniums since the nursery has them at 50% off.  If it were closer to fall I would be planting lettuces but good gosh the summer this year has been just too hot for lettuces.  It has been a very frustrating gardening season to say the least.  I'm already planning my fall garden so hopefully that will go a bit better!

My first attempt at growing pickling cucumbers wasn't as successful as I had hoped either. The powdery mildew hit with a vengence and what that didn't get the blight did. I only have one patch of zucchini (out of four--what was I thinking) still producing and the english cucs are still producing like crazy but the blight is slowly getting them too. Oh yeah forgot about the japanese bettle infestation. My garden gloves are coated in beatle guts. Regular squishing or drowing seems to be the only way to deal with those buggers. Nasty things.

Good luck with the rest of your garden.
