Rosalind Creasy of Mother Earth News has proposed a 100 Square Foot Garden Challenge. The challenge is produce as much edible food from a garden space of 100 square feet. Ideally according to Creasy the bed should be a 4' x 25' Jeavons style garden bed with the long end facing north to make crop rotation easier and eliminate shading problems. Basically a Jeavons garden bed is raised and no till very much like the currently popular square foot gardening method. Let the challenge begin but first a couple of comments.
You will need 100 square feet of growing space. It does not have to be in one large bed and can even be in containers as long as you end up with the total amount of growing space for the challenge. Please report back on how well your garden did for this challenge. Good luck!

Neighbours talking over the garden gate has long been a tradition. They share gardening tips, complain about the weather and pests yet are ever eager to discuss their gardens. That is what I had in mind when creating this blog. So stop by my garden gate to find out the latest happenings in my garden.

$700 is a lot of produce. You couldn't plant carrots and hope to have that much. What would you suggest as a good money making crop? Here, we are not zoned for a lot of what would be more expensive items in the grocery store.
ReplyDeleteHi Laura and thanks for visiting. I honestly cannot recommend a good money making crop as I grow for personal and family use. A good money making crop depends on your location as well as supply and demand. But 100 square feet is not a lot of growing space. That works out to 2 - 4' x 10' and 1 - 4' x 5' bed so in the big picture that is not a lot of growing space unless you manage it properly. My last garden was 248 square feet total all in raised beds not counting greenhouse and containers and it was optimized to the hilt. There would not have been enough to sell off of any of the crops.
